The Lieutenant of the Grand Master is elected for a term of one year. According to the Constitution, as the religious Superior and Sovereign, he must fully dedicate himself to the development of the works of the Order and to set an example of living by Christian principles, to all the members of the Order.
The Order of Malta’s relief unit in South Africa has been operating in Mandeni, South Africa, since 1992. The health personnel and the over thousand volunteers are active in numerous sectors, but their main mission remains treating and assisting HIV/AIDS patients through a hospice, children’s home and mobile clinics.
Events and initiatives are taking place in 30 Lithuanian cities to support projects for the elderly. The volunteers of the Order of Malta’s Lithuanian Association look after some 2,300 elderly people and have delivered over 95,000 hot meals during the year.
Every fourth refugee in Germany has been assisted by an Order of Malta volunteer on at least one occasion. Malteser Hilfsdienst, our relief service in Germany, has hired hundreds of new staff to manage the influx of refugees into the country
A signing ceremony took place in the Magistral Palace in Rome for the establishment of diplomatic relations between Grenada and the Sovereign Order of Malta. The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Grenada, Clarice Modeste-Curwen, was received by the Grand Chancellor Albrecht Boeselager.
Albrecht Boeselager opens the conference ‘Populations fleeing wars: relief, assistance & integration’ examining the impact of the war in Syria, the danger of routes taken by refugees to enter Europe and EU policies for integration. The conference was held in view of the World Humanitarian Summit.
