Federal Association Volunteer Projects
In order to become a member of the Order of Malta, an individual must have a record of service to the church and church-related causes. Even though they are, almost by definition, already involved with a number of charitable activities, the Knights and Dames are asked to do more — to participate in one of the Association's "signature" projects.
A "signature" project can be as big and easily defined as Malta Park in New Orleans or as quiet and nameless as the Saturday morning food distribution program in Dallas. Some of the projects have large projects with lots of Federal Association volunteers. Other regions have fewer members and, therefore, have smaller service projects. The defining factor is that members of the Order are working together in an effort to make someone happier, to "practice charity towards our neighbors, especially the poor and the sick".
Members of the Federal Association are volunteering at dozens of facilities all over the country. They are cooking and delivering food, answering phones, visiting the sick, repairing old homes, and lending all manner of professional expertise to facilities and individuals who need the help. It is impossible to calculate how many hours were volunteered or how many people benefit from the goodness and generosity of the Knights or Dames of the Federal Association.
