Summary of Recent Grants

ADM Feeding Program

Since 1990, the Federal Association has sent millions of pounds of food—all donated by Archer Daniel Midland—to the poor in Central America. The recipients are the Missionaries of Charity, and the official consignees and handlers of the food in country are local members of the Order of Malta. The six countries which receive these shipments are Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras and Nicaragua. The Federal Association makes 10-12 shipments (40' containers @ 80,000 pounds each) every year.

Clinic Program

Since 2000, the Federal Association has been sending two shipments of free medicines a year to health clinics in several US cities. Each clinic is asked to submit a list of the medications they use most frequently. These lists are then studied and a summary group of 15-20 medications is formed. The committee then obtains (often at no cost or at a great discount) these medicines and very significant shipments are made to all the clinics. Listed below are the clinics supported by the Federal Association.

The Clinic Program is hoping to support (at least) one health clinic in each of the Association's "Hospitaller" cities. Each facility must be visited and sponsored by the Hospitaller and another member of the Order. The clinic must provide medical care to the poor in a manner consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church.

In June 2004, the Clinic Program delivered a significant shipment of free medicines, vitamins and antibiotics to fourteen clinics nationwide. The cost to the Association was $94,000. The estimated value of all the medicines shipped in June is $690,000.

Task Force on Cuba

The Federal Association has made over two dozen shipments of food and supplies into Cuba since 1994. In 2000, the Task Force on Cuba has arranged to have over $700,000 worth of donated medicines sent to Cuba from Abbott Laboratories, as well as wheelchairs, recliners and other specialized equipment for the disabled valued at approximately $34,000. The Federal Association sent several delegations to Cuba to visit hospitals and other projects serving the poor.

Project Lifeline

The Federal Association is the principal sponsor of Project Lifeline, a program in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Over a 5-year period, the Association will provide almost $2 million worth of medicines each year for the children at the center run by the Daughters of Charity. The medicines will treat respiratory diseases, measles, diarrheal disease, malaria and malnutrition. The sisters estimate that 15,000 children are treated each year.
